As a wedding photographer based in Palm Beach, Florida, I've had the privilege of capturing countless love stories in some of the most breathtaking venues across the Sunshine State. However, there's one location that never fails to leave me in awe: Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. This magnificent estate, nestled in the heart of Miami, is a testament to timeless elegance and unparalleled beauty. Today, I want to take you on a journey through this enchanting venue and share why it's become one of my favorite spots to photograph weddings.

A Glimpse into History

Vizcaya's story begins in the early 20th century when industrialist James Deering decided to build his winter retreat in Miami. Constructed between 1914 and 1922, Vizcaya was conceived as a modern interpretation of an 18th-century Italian villa, drawing inspiration from the country estates of the Veneto region in northern Italy.

What makes Vizcaya truly remarkable is how its designers seamlessly blended traditional Mediterranean architectural elements with the subtropical climate of Florida. The result? A stunning property that not only pays homage to the past but also embraces modernity and comfort.

The Main House

The Main House at Vizcaya is the crown jewel of the estate. Its timeless Mediterranean-style architecture houses collections dating from the early 20th century all the way back to ancient Pompeii. As you walk through its halls, you can't help but feel transported to another era.

What surprises many visitors (and couples planning their weddings) is that despite its Baroque appearance, Vizcaya was incredibly modern for its time. Built largely of reinforced concrete, the house was equipped with the latest technology of the period, including:

  • Generators
  • A water filtration system
  • Heating and ventilation
  • Two elevators
  • A dumbwaiter
  • Refrigerators
  • An automated telephone switchboard
  • A central vacuum-cleaning system
  • A partly automated laundry room

This blend of historical charm and modern amenities makes Vizcaya a truly unique wedding venue that offers both beauty and practicality.

A Tour of Vizcaya's Breathtaking Spaces

The Courtyard

At the center of the Main House lies the Courtyard, which was originally open to the sky. This space serves as the main living area and is perfect for intimate wedding ceremonies or cocktail hours. The play of light and shadow in this space throughout the day creates a magical atmosphere that's a dream to photograph.

The East Façade

James Deering wanted Vizcaya to be approached and seen from the sea, which is why the east façade facing Biscayne Bay is the most monumental and the only symmetrical one. This grand entrance opens onto a wide terrace that descends toward the water, offering a spectacular backdrop for wedding photos and outdoor receptions.

The Gardens

Vizcaya's formal gardens are a sight to behold. With their meticulously manicured lawns, intricate fountains, and lush vegetation, they provide countless opportunities for romantic portraits and group shots. The south façade of the house opens onto these gardens, with enclosed loggias on the first and second floors offering beautiful views and shelter from the Florida sun.

One of Vizcaya's most delightful inventions is the swimming pool that emerges from vaulted arches at the lower level of the house on the north façade. This unexpected feature adds a touch of whimsy and provides a great spot for some fun and relaxed wedding party photos.
